Animal Testing What if You Were in Their Place Essay
Every year about 241,000 rabbits are tortured in United States laboratories to test for the effects that household products, such as cosmetics, dishwashing liquid, and drain cleaner will have on their eyes (Rabbits in Laboratories | PETA.org. 1). Scientists will drip chemicals into the eyes of the animal to see how much irritation it will cause, a process known as the Draize eye irritancy test (Rabbits in Laboratories | PETA.org. 1). The test is certainly not pain free; it often causes distress, such as redness, swelling, and sometimes blindness. After the rabbits are finished being toyed with, they are killed (Rabbits in Laboratories | PETA.org. 1). In particular, about 75,000 dogs, including thousands from homeless shelters, are abused every year in laborat ories in the United States (Dogs in Laboratories | PETA.orgâ⬠1). ââ¬Å"Manââ¬â¢s best friendâ⬠is a preferred choice by scientists for use in toxicology experiments. Dogs are tormented as they undergo tests involving overdoses of pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, pesticides, or household products, gradually poisoning them and sometimes resulting in death (Dogs in Laboratories | PETA.orgâ⬠1). In what way does treating animals with such disrespect seem ethical at all? Animals were not put on the earth to be destroyed for research in the name of ââ¬Å"science.â⬠Regardless of the devastating facts behind animal testing, supporters of using laboratory animals argue that without animal testing it would be hard for researchers to guarantee that drugs and medical procedures are safe for use on humans (ââ¬Å"Update: Animal Testingâ⬠). They are ignoring the animalsââ¬â¢ well-being. If scientists were dissecting live humans, people would be disgusted and call that murder. Animals and people may look different, but we are both living things.
